ABstract
Solid waste remains as one of the major problems around the world. Its worsening condition is evident as non – biodegradable wastes continuously fill up our oceans and landfills despite preventive and control measures. The risks that dumpsites pose to our health and nature may include surface water pollution, soil and groundwater contamination, loss of vegetation, and mild effects on our well-being. With the mandate of closure by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the disposal facility at our municipality located at Barangay Bibirao, Daet, Camarines Norte which has operated for 31 years before its closure was closed last July 30, 2018 leaving 1.9 hectares of land to rehabilitate in the form of an establishment of an eco-park.
The purpose of this study is to provide information on the physicochemical properties of soil and groundwater on the local dumpsite at Bibirao, Daet, Camarines Norte to identify its agricultural viability. Soil parameters have been evaluated from outside and inside the local dumpsite. Then the groundwater samples have been assessed from the jetmatic pumps at different distances outside the facility. The physical properties of the soil showed a regular range in terms of pH with the Eastern Area noting the highest with 7.85. Silt loam and sandy loam soils are classified in the area. On the other hand, the chemical properties of soil showed varying levels specifically for the heavy metals. The EA area has 111.78 ppm Lead (Pb) concentrations and other areas exceeded the limit for it. However, the groundwater samples showed regular values within the standard limit without any contamination detected.
With the current state of the local dumpsite in Bibirao, the researchers proposed a suitability map along with an in-depth analysis of the soil and groundwater sample within the local dumpsite to maximize the area's usability for agricultural purposes, remediation operations based on soil samples must be carried out. The researchers sought assistance and support from the Local Government Unit of Daet, Municipal Environment, and Natural Resources Office, and Solid Waste Management Division.
OVERVIEW OF THE STUDY
vIDEO
Solid wastes are left piled up in dumpsites, where they can cause both health and environmental risks such as soil and groundwater contamination that impacts crop and plant production through the leachate that it produces. Plants heavily rely on the soil for its growth and development that it absorbs what is in it that may eventually proceed to our food chain, affecting our health.
